LIVINGSTONE ANNOUNCES 2008 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE April 9, 2008 – Salisbury, NC –Livingstone College has released its 2008 football schedule. The line up features the Blue Bears competing against the Hornets of Concordia College (Selma, AL) in Greenville, SC for the Greenville HBCU Classic. They will then travel to “Tiger Country” to take on Division-I Savannah State (Savannah, GA). The gridiron battle will continue with the Blue Bears hosting the Indians of Catawba College (Salisbury, NC), followed by their CIAA opener against Bowie State University, also played at Alumni Memorial Stadium.
Other home games feature Saint Augustine's College on October 18 for Homecoming, and Shaw University on October 25. Season tickets are also available at $75 per person, which will also include a ticket to the Greenville HBCU Classic and a “Blue Bear Bag” that will include promotional items valued at more than $25.00 along with a parking pass to all home contests.
Tuesday, December 4, 2007 Blue Bears Dominate Shaw Bears in William Trent Gym 83-70
Salisbury, NC – In its final home game in the year 2007, Livingstone (7-2, 2-1 CIAA) excited its students and home fans with an 83-70 win over the Shaw Bears (2-3, 0-1 CIAA). Michael Duncan rang out 23 points and six assists that set the pace for the Blue Bears. Travis Young recorded his second double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Tayloe Taylor also scored 12 points with seven assists. Big men Durrell Baker and Mario Satterthwaite netted 11 and 10 respectfully. The Blue Bears led by five (45-40) at the half. more | stats
Tuesday, December 04, 2007 Scoring Drought downs Lady Blue Bears 46-70 to Shaw
Salisbury, NC – Two Livingstone scoring droughts in the second half expands a 24 point victory (70-46) for Shaw University (6-1, 2-1 CIAA) in William Trent Gymnasium. NeKeisha Anthony led the Lady Bears with 19 points while Jessica Davis and Jamie Goshen added 16 and 11 respectfully. Two Lady Blue Bears from the bench led the effort with nine points each; Brandie Shaw and Sherrell Lawson. Livingstone (1-7, 0-3 CIAA) trailed at the half 22-30. more | stats
Saturday, December 1, 2007 Blue Bears Improves to 6-2 with 73-55 defeat over WVa Wesleyan
Salisbury, NC – Livingstone (6-2 overall) is in stride with repeating one of its most successful starts. When Head Coach James Stinson took over the program in 2004, he guided the Blue Bears to an 8-2 overall record leading into the Christmas Break. After the CIAA Tournament, Livingstone posted one of its best records in history with a 17-12 overall and 8-8 conference record. Salisbury, NC – Livingstone College women’s basketball team does not play according to its record of 1-6. Despite its 57-49 loss today to cross-town opponent Catawba College (4-1 overall); the game was not decided until 50 seconds remaining in the game when the Lady Blue Bears trailed by three point (49-52). Tuesday, November 27, 2007 Michael Duncan Lifts Livingstone over Bowie State 72-69 in Overtime
Salisbury, NC – Livingstone College (5-1 overall, 1-0 CIAA) defeated Bowie State University 72-69 in overtime during its conference opener. Michael Duncan (Cleveland, OH) led the game, for the Blue Bears, with 17 points and scored the final field goal of the game with 1:14 remaining in the extra period. Duncan also hit a three-pointer with three seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score 62-62. Durrell Baker scored a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Mario Satterthwaite netted 12 points while point guard Tayloe Taylor chipped in ten points and seven assists. Falling behind in the first quarter by as much as ten points, Livingstone closed the gap for a 29-30 halftime deficit. more | stats
Saturday, November 24, 2007 Livingstone defeats Knights at Holiday Classic
PEMBROKE, N.C.—Senior forward Benny Zacharias (Raeford, N.C.) had career-highs of seven points and seven rebounds to lead St. Andrews Presbyterian College but Livingstone College won its second straight game in the 2007 UNCP Holiday Classic (hosted by UNC Pembroke) with a 77-64 non-conference men’s basketball victory on Saturday afternoon in the English E. Jones Center.
Livingstone improved to 4-1 on the season with a balanced scoring attack that included seven Blue Bears with seven or more points. Sophomore Calvin Gunning (Camden, N.J.) paced the designated visitors with 15 points in the neutral site showdown. more | stats
Friday, November 23, 2007 Livingstone Prevails 64-61 Over UNC Pembroke
Pembroke, NC -Livingstone College (3-1 overall) improved its style play compared to its recent loss to Mars Hill to defeat host UNC Pembroke 64-61 in its Holiday Classic. Tayloe Taylor and Calvin Gunning chipped in 13 points and three steals each to lead the team in victory. Although the shooting percentage dropped to 44.9%, the Blue Bears forced the Braves (1-1 overall) into 19 turnovers and converted them into 23 points. Jonathan Hart of UNCP led the game with 27 points and ten rebounds. LC was up at the half 28-25. more | stats
Wednesday, November 20, 2007 Livingstone holds off Bluefield State 43-42
Salisbury, NC - The Lady Blue Bears won its home opener versus the Lady Blues of Bluefield State 43-42. While both teams shot poorly from the floor, Livingstone (1-2 overall) utilized its defense for the victory. Chelsea Johnson forced a Lady Blues turnover and foul with seven seconds remaining in the game. After a pair of missed free throws, Bluefield State missed a last second attempt at a three-pointer. Asheka Hudson (Junior, Milwaukee, WI/Pius XI HS) and Turquoise Lane (Senior, Winston-Salem, NC/Carver HS) led all with ten points. Lane led the defensive effort with seven steals. Livingstone led by one at the half, 21-20.
Bluefield State (0-2 overall) shot 32.5% in field goals and made 5 of 16 attempts in the first half. Livingstone shot 35.4% for the game and made 8 of 22 shots in the second half. The Lady Blue Bears last field goal was with 2:50 remaining in the game. LC’s largest lead was by seven points in the first half with 15:44 remaining. Both teams scored 22 points in the second half. Saturday, November 17, 2007 Blue Bears Continues to Improve with 73-64 Win over Belmont Abbey
Salisbury, NC – Livingstone College, now 2-0 overall, defeated visiting Belmont Abbey College 73-64 in an afternoon match-up. Four players scored in double-figures while the Blue Bears shot 49.1% from the floor and 84.6% from the free throw line. Mario Satterthwaite (Greenville, NC) led all with 19 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Calvin Gunning (Camden, NJ) followed with 18 points of his own. The Crusaders (0-2 overall) led at the half 33-31.
Down at the half, the Blue Bears (2-0) took complete control of the lead in the second half with 12:09 remaining; when leading scorer Satterthwaite scored a lay-up for the 44-42 score. Thursday, November 15, 2007 Livingstone Devastate Season Opener with 104-81 Victory Over Morris College
Salisbury, NC – Livingstone College (1-0 overall) opened the 2007-08 season with a 104-81 thrashing over Morris College. Six Blue Bears scored in double figures tonight while the team shot 51.5 percent from the floor. Senior point guard Michael Duncan (Cleveland, OH) led the game with 20 points while Senior Mario Satterthwaite (Greenville, NC) and Tayloe Taylor (Junior, Memphis, TN) both finished with a double-double. Satterthwaite totaled 17 points and 11 rebounds. Taylor had ten points and 11 assists. Livingstone led at the half 49-30. more | stats
November 8, 2007 Livingstone Survives Day 1 of CIAA Volleyball Tournament and Sets a New Record
Charlotte, NC – If history serves correct, Livingstone College accomplished a feat that has never been done since it started playing volleyball in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. After defeating Virginia State 3-2 in Brayboy Gymnasium, the Lady Blue Bears relocated to Grady Coles Center for its second game. Fayetteville State (21-10 overall) defeated Livingstone 3-0 (10-30, 18-30, 19-30). In a double elimination situation, the Lady Blue Bears rebounded to crush Saint Paul’s College 3-0 (30-20, 30-15, 30-12). Historical records have Livingstone playing in the annual tournament in 1997, but it does not have a record of the Lady Blue Bears playing past the first round. Thursday, November 8 Livingstone defeats Virginia State 3-2 in Championship Tournament
Charlotte, NC – The Lady Blue Bears (20-5, 9-5 CIAA) defeated Virginia State 3-2 in volleyball championship action today in Charlotte, NC. Livingstone won the first set 30-26 in Brayboy Gymnasium. The Lady Trojans tied the series in the second set by a score of 31-29. In a game of hard spikes and spectacular digs, LC won the third set for a series lead 30-24 while VSU dominated the fourth set to even the series (2-2) 30-25. In the final set, for all the marbles, All-CIAA performer Davia Moss (Jr., Nassau, Bahamas) led Livingstone to victory 15-12.
Moss led the game with 20 kills off of 51 attacks. Shannon Allen (Fr., Henderson, NC) followed with 11 kills off 45 total attacks. Allen also finished with 24 digs.
Virginia State was led by Reneshia Hill, who finished with 14 kills and 44 attacks. Three other Lady Trojans had double-digit kills.
Livingstone will play Divisional Champ Fayetteville State at 3:00 pm in the Grady Cole Center. stats
Wednesday, November 7 Livingstone qualifies for CIAA Volleyball Tournament
Salisbury, NC – The Lady Blue Bears volleyball team has achieved a feat that has eluded Livingstone since 1997. The team has qualified for participation in the CIAA Volleyball Tournament. All of the Fall CIAA Championships, except cross country, will be hosted by Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC. The qualifiers will be split into two pools where one will play in Brayboy Gymnasium and the other at Grady Cole. The first of three rounds will begin on Thursday morning at 9:00 am. more
Saturday, November 3, 2007 LIVINGSTONE HONORS 115 YEARS OF BLACK COLLEGE FOOTBALL: JC SMITH EXTENDS VICTORY MARGIN WITH 47-7 WIN
Salisbury, NC – A storied history of football between Johnson C. Smith (formerly known as Biddle) and Livingstone adds another record in the books. In Salisbury, NC, where it all began, The Golden Bulls (3-7, 2-5 CIAA) remained atop of the bottom cellar with a 47-7 romping over the Blue Bears who finished out the 2007 season with a 0-10 overall and 0-7 CIAA record. During halftime with a JCSU 44-7 lead, Livingstone honored its 2007 Class of Hall of Fame Inductees and a proclamation was read in commemoration of 115 years of Black College Football. The majority of the excitement displayed on the field came after the game from the two institutions drum lines. more | stats
November 2, 2007 Davia Moss and Lydia Blakey Honored by CIAA Hampton, VA... The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association celebrates the 2007 selections for All-CIAA Volleyball Team, All-CIAA Rookie Team and Players of the Year.
Davia Moss will represent Livingstone College on the team as a Middle Hitter. Moss is a junior transfer from Nassau Bahamas. To date, she has over 296 kills and 708 total attacks. Her attack percentage is .234. Davia has a total of 22 set assists, 64 service aces, 177 digs, 26 solo blocks, and 43 assisted blocks in 79 games played.
Lydia Blakey was selected to the 2007 All CIAA Rookie Team. Blakey, who hails from Winston, GA, plays in the Outside Hitter position. As a freshman, she has 49 kills and 191 total attacks which gives her a percentage of -.005. She has 23 set assists, 28 service aces, 57 digs, and 22 total blocks.
The 2007 All-CIAA Team and All-CIAA Rookie Teams are selected by the CIAA Volleyball Coaches Association and will be honored at the Volleyball Championship Luncheon at Grimes Hall on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, NC on Wednesday, November 7, 2006 at 11:30 am.
