Livingstone’s Shade finishes 35th at the
NCAA DII XC Nationals
Pomona, CA – Darius Shade, a sophomore runner
from Livingstone College, competed in the NCAA Division II Men’s Cross
Country Nationals. The event was hosted by Cal Poly Pomona at the
Prado Park in Chino, Ca with 182 student-athletes participating. The
runners had to endure a 10K course in mid 80 degree California
weather. Shade, who won the CIAA and the Southeast Region, finished 35th
out of 172 finishers in 32:55. The top 30 American runners are
considered All American. After subtracting the international runners,
Darius Shade is now Livingstone's first Cross Country All-American. He improved from the 125th
finish from last year and dropped his time from 34:46.
"Today was the toughest race I ever ran. I have never felt
like this before; even when I ran in road races in the mountains. The heat
made me feel like stopping or falling out. I seriously though about it
until I remembered all the practices, the hills, the team, Livingstone, and
everybody routing for me. I couldn't let them down and make all of my
preparations for today go in vain. I hope I make All-American and make
everybody proud of me," states exhausted Shade.
