Catawba Celebrates 100 years with 46-7 defeat over Livingstone

 

Salisbury, NC – 100 years of Catawba football was honored tonight in Shuford Stadium with a 46-7 victory over Livingstone. For the Indians’ season opener, Catawba (2-0) won the coin toss and scored on every drive except for the last two in the first half to add a tremendous 33-0 strain over first year coach Lamonte Massie and the young Blue Bears. Livingstone (0-2) responded in the third quarter with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Steven Williams to Donte Daye and capped an eight-play drive for 77 yards. Catawba finished the game 46-7 to celebrate a century of football.

 

Catawba received the opening kick and sent a message to new Head Coach Lamonte Massie with its first score in nine plays and 43 yards. Kory Fisher pranced five yards into the endzone while Jared Temple added the extra point kick. George Bell walked two yards into pay land with 2:06 remaining in the first.  The following kick failed. Charlie Walker returned an interception thrown by Steven Williams off of a fake field goal attempt 82 yards for a 27-0 lead. The final score of the half came from a 54-yard connection from Brad Roach to Brent Johnson. The pursuing kick failed which ended the half 33-0. The Indians led the half with 293 total yards to the Blue Bears 53 yards. Livingstone had a net of 26 rushing yards and 27 passing yards. Catawba accumulated 123 yards rushing and 170 yards passing.

 

Livingstone received the opening kickoff for the second half on its 23-yard line. Williams threw a 23-yard pass to Delric Ellington to reach its 46-yard line. On third and 14, Williams reconnected with Ellington for six yards to put Livingstone at its 48-yard line. Facing fourth and eight yards to go, a Catawba penalty (12-men of the field) helped the Blue Bears to the Indians 47-yard line and fourth and three to go. Ellington received the fake punt attempt snap and scampered 31 yards to the 16-yard line. Williams completed the scoring drive with an 11-yard pass to Donte Daye into the endzone. Joshua Feliciano made the extra point kick with 11:22 on the clock.

 

With the game in full control, George Bell rushed for five yards in the third quarter and the fourth quarter to advance the final score to 46-7.

 

Livingstone will host its home opener next weekend against Virginia Union University in Alumni Memorial Stadium at 6:00 pm.
