Lucky Number Seven Unfavorable for Blue Bears: Virginia State defeats Livingstone 30-7
Salem, VA – Virginia State University (2-2 overall, 1-0 CIAA) unloaded 16 unanswered points in the first quarter of the Eight Annual Western Virginia Education Classic held in Salem, VA. The Trojans extended its lead to 30 by halftime; but faced a different Blue Bears team in the second half. Livingstone (0-4, 0-1 CIAA) scored early after intermission with a 15-yard hurl from Sophomore Steven Williams (Decatur, GA) to Freshman Donte Daye (Burlington, NC). VSU’s Nick Fleming (Chester, VA) was named Offensive MVP with a total of 135 net rushing. LC’s Lionel Vincent (Las Vegas, NV) received the Defensive MVP for having 12 total tackles and a fumble recovery for 15 yards.
On the opening possession, Virginia State advanced the ball 56 yards and nailed a 31-yard field goal by Justin Parker (Petersburg, VA)to put the first points on the board. On the following kickoff, Parker booted the ball into the endzone for a touchback. Backing the Livingstone offense up to it’s nine-yard line, the Trojans forced the Blue Bears to short punt the ball giving VSU possession on the Livingstone 15-yard line. Four plays later, Parker nailed his second field goal from 27 yards out to give VSU a 6-0 lead. The special teams’ play of the Trojans once again prevented the Blue Bears from leaving its 20-yard line giving way for Donte Edwards (Hampton, VA) to pick off a Steven Williams pass at the 24-yard line and returning it untouched into the endzone for the 13-0 lead. With 2:54 remaining in the first quarter, Parker hit a third field goal for 42 yards.
Quarterback Michael Terry (Charlottesville, VA) managed the remaining points for Virginia State throwing two touchdowns in the second quarter. His first was to Davian Richards (Orlando, FL), who caught a four-yard pass with 7:17 remaining in the third quarter. The second connection was with Antoine Morton (Woodbridge, VA) for 20 yards into pay dirt with 1:44 remaining in the third.
Livingstone will host its Homecoming next weekend to Fayetteville State University in the confines of Alumni Memorial Stadium. Virginia State will host Elizabeth City State University in Petersburg, VA.
