Livingstone Scores Season High 20 in Homecoming Loss to Fayetteville State
Salisbury, NC – Livingstone alum gathered today for the celebration of its annual homecoming activities and remembrance of the 1997 CIAA Championship Team. The championship Blue Bears finished the ’97 season winning all ten games but forfeited the first two games for an 8-2 record. After today’s match-up against another 0-4 team, Fayetteville State, Livingstone scored a season high 20 points in the 58-20 homecoming loss. The Broncos led at the half 42-14.
Fayetteville State (1-4, 1-1 CIAA) watched Paratroopers deliver the game ball and won the opening toss. With the first possession of the game, the Broncos marched 78 yards to the first score with 8:09 on the clock. Jay Autry connected with Eddie Agans with a 13-yard pass. Andre’ Dunn blocked the Blue Bears first punt to gain its next possession at the Livingstone 39-yard line. Three plays later, FSU advanced its lead 14-0 by a 21-yard run by Travis Green.
At the start of the second quarter with 14:43 on the clock, Autry found Jarrod Lewis 41 yards downfield in the end zone for a 21-0 lead. Again with 9:44 on the clock, FSU upped the score 28-0. Eddie Agans walked four yards to end the 46-yard scoring drive in six plays to top 3:03.
Livingstone put its first successful drive together when it scored with 9:09 remaining in the first half. Steven Williams hit Donte’ Daye for 11 yards to cap a 68-yard drive in four plays.
Following the LC score, Travis Green returned the kickoff 50 yards to the Livingstone 16-yard line. Bobby Wilder rushed the ball two plays later for a 15-yard score with 8:17 remaining in the half.
At 4:37, Livingstone reached a season milestone by scoring its 14th point off of a Steven Williams two-yard rush. The scoring drive took three and a half minutes and consumed 51 yards in eight plays.
Prior to the end of the first half, Livingstone fumbled its possession, which was recovered by FSU on the LC 24-yard line. Before time could run out of the half with 18 seconds remaining, Travis Green rushed in for two yards for the 42-14 halftime lead.
After a motivating halftime session, the Blue Bears, Anthon Harris returned the kickoff 54 yards to the FSU 32-yard line. Williams moved the ball around the field and found Rashaad Flucker 19 yards in the endzone to close the score 42-20. The point-after kick attempt was blocked by Geron Harper and retuned 100 yards for a defensive extra-point by Barry Dunn for a 44-20 lead.
Fayetteville State continued to score in the third quarter with 11:30 remaining for a 51-20 lead. Autry heaved a 57-yard pass in the air which landed in Bobby Wilder’s hands for the score. The score lasted four plays and 74 yards. The final score of the game came from Fayetteville State’s Autry, when he tossed a four-yard pass to Darren Obaji for a final 58-20 score.
Fayetteville State racked up 505 offensive yards balancing 278 rushing yards and 288 passing yards. Livingstone improved its offensive performance with 295 total yards. The Blue Bears moved the ball on the ground 111 yards and through the air for 184 yards. AnThon Harris returned five kickoffs for 160 yards. His longest return was for 54 yards.
Livingstone will travel to Bowie, MD next weekend to face the Bulldogs of Bowie State. Fayetteville State will host Elizabeth City State.
