Coach James Stinson earns
300th victory by Defeating Bowie State 83-79
Salisbury, NC –
Livingstone College (4-9, 2-6 CIAA) set a milestone tonight
with an 83-79 victory over the visiting Bulldogs of Bowie
State University (9-5, 5-5 CIAA). The victory marked the 300th
career victory for Blue Bears Head Coach James Stinson, who
has been coaching at Livingstone since 2004. Prior to
Livingstone, Stinson coached at Barber-Scotia for 13 seasons
and compiled a 272-158 record. His record at LC currently
stands at 28-42 in three seasons. Livingstone made free
throws and an improved its’ defense down the stretch to
secure the victory. Bowie State held a slim 42-41 lead at
the half.
Bowie State dominated the
first half but only led 42-41, behind Gil Goodrich’s
17-point performance. Goodrich hit five three-pointers to
help the Bulldogs build a nine point lead. Livingstone
fought back with a balanced game and the scoring of Chris
Worley (9 points) and Steven Butler (8 points).
Bowie State may have
highlighted the first half; but the second half was a dog
fight to the end. The intense game saw 18 lead changes but
had Livingstone ahead for most of the half. The final tie
between the two was at 4:13 left with the score 66-66.
Livingstone grabbed a five point lead at 1:31 (75-70) but
Gil Goodrich decreased it to 77-75 with 38 seconds
remaining. After his three-point shot, Goodrich committed a
foul off of the inbound that sent Christopher Worley to the
line. In BSU’s efforts to stop the clock for possessions
with fouls, Livingstone countered the strategy by making six
of eight free throws and prevented Bowie State from making
any more three-pointers.
Bowie State made 10 of 23
field goals from behind the three-pointer arc. Livingstone
out-rebounded the Bulldogs 44-29, scored 14 points off of
turnovers to nine, and scored 17 second chance points to 13.
The Blue Bears bench scored 21 points to 12.
