Livingstone Prevails 64-61 Over UNC Pembroke

 

Pembroke, NC -Livingstone College (3-1 overall) improved its style play compared to its recent loss to Mars Hill to defeat host UNC Pembroke 64-61 in its Holiday Classic. Tayloe Taylor and Calvin Gunning chipped in 13 points and three steals each to lead the team in victory. Although the shooting percentage dropped to 44.9%, the Blue Bears forced the Braves (1-1 overall) into 19 turnovers and converted them into 23 points. Jonathan Hart of UNCP led the game with 27 points and ten rebounds. LC was up at the half 28-25.

 

The Blue Bears turned up the pressure at the start of the second half to create its largest lead of the game, 14 points, with 9:22 remaining in the game. After committing ten turnovers in the first half and nine during LC’s full court press, UNC Pembroke fought its way through the onslaught to diminish the lead to two points with 3:38 remaining in the game. With 15 trips to the free throw line in the second half, the Braves converted 12 of them to square the game even with 2:10 remaining. Hart hit the two free throws to make the score 54-54. It was the improved defense and four of six free throws at the end of the game that preserved the victory for the Blue Bears.

 

Livingstone enjoyed a slight 28-25 lead at halftime. The Blue Bears had balanced play from the starting five shooting 48% from the floor. William Bryant gave a spark to the team by hitting two back-to-back three’s. Calvin Gunning’s defensive pressure forced three turnovers which led to immediate scores.

 

The Blue Bears will play St. Andrews at UNC Pembroke tomorrow at 3:00 pm in the second game of the Holiday Classic.
