Thursday, February 15, 2007 Livingstone Conquers Lady Golden Bulls 58-56 in overtime at Brayboy Gymnasium
Charlotte, NC – In one of the toughest gymnasiums in the CIAA, Livingstone (11-13, 8-9 CIAA) defeated Johnson C. Smith (13-11, 8-9 CIAA) 58-56 in overtime. Clintoria Bryant led the way for the Lady Blue Bears with 16 points while Lina Brown followed with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Tiana Pope also scored 16 points for Johnson C. Smith. The Lady Golden Bulls held a 27-21 lead at the half. In the previous match-up, JCSU won off of a last second shot in Salisbury.
Johnson C. Smith opened the game with a 12-2 run that consumed the first 6:49 of the half. The Lady Golden Bulls once led in the half by as much as 11 points with 8:30 remaining. Rochelle Bodie topped the half with nine points and five rebounds for Johnson C. Smith. Livingstone improved its play in the post (14-10 points in paint) to trail at the half 21-27.
The Lady Blue Bears pieced together a 9-0 run early in the second half to take its first lead of the game (30-29). The run was a direct result of six turnovers. LC took a six-point lead with 4:22 remaining after a 12-2 run. Clintoria Bryant led the run with five points.
Johnson C. Smith put the game within two with 2:05 remaining in the game with a 6-2 run. As time winded down the JCSU failed on an opportunity to tie the game with 45 seconds left in the game. After a LC turnover, Tiana Pope drove up court and nailed a jumper from within the free-throw line to tie the game 49-49 with 10 seconds on the clock.
In the overtime period, the control of the lead see-sawed between the two with Livingstone holding a one point lead with 25 second remaining in the extra period. After a timeout, Lamika Davis pulled the trigger for a three point lead with 20 seconds on the clock. After a JCSU failed three-point attempt, Lina Brown was called for her fifth personal foul that put Demetria Bell on the line to close the gap. Making one of two, Livingstone was fouled on the inbound play and missed the front end of a one-and-one. Down by two, JC Smith failed a last minute jumper at the expiration of the game.
Lamika Davis was the third Lady Blue Bear to score in double figures with 12 points.
Tiana Pope led Johnson C. Smith with 16 points while Rochelle Bodie netted 15.
Livingstone will travel to Saint Augustine’s on February 20. Johnson C. Smith will travel to Shaw on the 17th. |
