Livingstone College Defeats Lady Falcons 56-48
RALEIGH – After trailing most of the second half, Saint Augustine’s College surged ahead with a rally. Livingstone College, however, regained the lead late with a spurt of its own and won 56-48 in a CIAA Western Division women’s basketball game at Emery Gymnasium on Tuesday, February 20, 2007.
Lina Brown, a 6-3 junior, led the way with 20 points, seven rebounds and six blocks for the Lady Blue Bears, who scored 15 unanswered points in the last six minutes to erase a 48-41 Lady Falcons’ lead. Kimone Johns, a reserve, sparked the comeback by scoring the game’s final nine points including six points off offensive rebounds. Johns finished the night with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Johns started her scoring spurt with a rebound and layup, which gave the Lady Blue Bears (12-13, 9-9 CIAA, 3-4 Western Division) their final lead at 49-48 at the 2:33 mark, and the Lady Blue Bears never looked back.
Before Johns’ scoring spree, the Lady Falcons (6-20, 4-15 CIAA, 0-7 Western Division) appeared poised to win their first Western Division game. A 12-0 run in the second half capped by LaConya Polk’s three-point play erased a five-point Lady Blue Bears’ lead and gave the Lady Falcons a 46-39 lead with seven minutes remaining. But the Lady Falcons’ couldn’t hold off their opponent in losing their sixth straight CIAA contest.
Polk, a senior forward from Menifee, AR, scored 16 points and sophomore guard Kenyada Wade (Detroit, MI) added a career-high 13 points for the Lady Falcons, who host Fayetteville State in their final regular-season game on Thursday, February 22, 2007 at Emery Gymnasium. The tip-off starts at 5:30 p.m. Senior forward Renata Spinks (Jonesboro, LA) led the Lady Falcons with eight rebounds, and junior guard Dorothy Vernoy (Frederick, MD) added seven rebounds. |
