November 6, 2004 Darius Shade advances Livingstone to the Cross Country National Championship Wingate, NC – The Livingstone men’s cross country team participated in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championship at Wingate University (NC). In the men’s 10K race, LC freshman Darius Shade finished second overall in 32:20 to qualify for the NCAA Nationals, which will be hosted by the University of Southern Indiana at the USI Cross Country Course on Nov. 20. The team finished 12th overall. One of three student-athletes who will advance to the National Championships, Darius Shade ran the first half of the course in a pack of five. After the midpoint, Shade and St. Augustine’s Larry Marshall separated themselves from the group. After exchanging leads, Darius commanded the lead with a mile and half to go. Turning the final corner with less than 50 yards to go, the two veered towards the finish line with Shade in the lead. With 20 yards to end, Marshall regained momentum and won the number one spot by two second over Shade. Shattering the facility record by two minutes, Marshall was named Southeast Region “Runner of the Year”. The rivalry between Shade and Marshall began early this season at the Great American Cross Country Festival (Cary, NC). Marshall won the Small Colleges race 46 seconds in front of Shade, who finished second. The second meeting was at the CIAA Championships on the same course of the festival. Marshall won the race 19 seconds in front of Darius. The rivalry will now continue on the national level as the two individuals will represent their institutions and the CIAA at the championships. Mars Hill College won both the men’s and women’s titles and will advance along with Lenoir-Rhyne men and Wingate’s women.
